The Bourke Water Tower Project
In April 2021, a remarkable endeavor began in Bourke, New South Wales, as the transformation of the Bourke Water Tower into a stunning work of art commenced. Completed in just four short weeks, this ambitious project pays homage to a local legend – Percy Hobson.
Born in Gundabooka and hailing from Bourke, Percy Hobson made history in 1962 as the first Indigenous athlete to secure a medal at the Commonwealth Games. At the tender age of 20, Percy shattered records and defied expectations when he soared over a towering 6’11 high bar at Perth’s Perry Lakes Stadium. This awe-inspiring feat solidified Percy's place in Australian sporting history as one of the nation's most iconic athletes.
To honour Percy's extraordinary achievement, Bourke has dedicated the Water Tower as a canvas for a magnificent mural depicting the iconic moment when Percy leapt into the air, securing his first gold medal. Capturing the essence of Percy's triumphant spirit, the mural stands as a testament to his indomitable courage and unwavering determination.
